I bought this book on accident. I intended to buy the cookbook but read it anyway. Well tried to read it. I'm not gonna lie this book is hard to push through. The diet itself is a pretty simple concept. No calorie or macro counting. Your meals are split into 2 types, savory meals with healthy fats, protein and veggies or meals with lower glycemic carbs (eg sweet potatoe), lean protein and veggies. You can mix up meal types as you wish but unless you are in a maintenance phase or expecting/nursing or a child, carbs and fats should not be paired together in a meal except for in minimal amounts. No sugar or white flour is allowed but stevia is on plan and white potatoes discouraged until the maintenance phase. This is a diabetic friendly diet and seems nutritionally sound. The problem with this book is that it just goes on and on and on and there comes a time where you just want them to get to the point already. Because it's written in a conversational tone the endless mashup of personal religious beliefs, nutritional statistics, anecdotes, goofy names for plan food groups as well as lots of references to recipes but no actual recipes all got on my nerves pretty quick. The authors are encouraging and I love that they include a section on expecting and nursing moms but there's so much material here that the actual diet plan can get lost in the noise. These ladies have a lot to say.I did buy the cookbook and there are some great looking recipes in there that I look forward to trying. There was an abbreviated recap but still longwinded explanation of the plan before the recipe section so that book is really all anyone would need to follow the plan. They also have a line of products you can purchase but arent necessary for the recipes. I don't have a problem with that but some may. If their baking mix helps produce a low carb bread that doesn't taste like crap I'd gladly buy it. Low carb cooking requires imagination and lots of trial and error so I appreciate anything that makes my life easier in that regard.Bottom line is that I'd skip this book and go straight to the cookbook. I have no clue if their concept of separating fats and carbs is effective in and of itself but the plan focuses on low glycemic foods, healthy fats and an overall healthier approach to eating without having to count calories or points. Just wish the plan was presented in a more straight forward manner.
I kept seeing THM recipes popping up on Pinterest, so I thought I'd check it out. After searching the web, I kept seeing positive success stories, but little detail of the plan.I ordered this book to get the details & was ready to get some fresh ideas into my normal routine. I should have stopped at the recipes.First, the authors seem like people I would avoid at all costs in real life. The chatter throughout is incredibly annoying. Kind of like the "Hey, gurl! I spread rumors about you in high school but buy my MLM junk!" vibe. It's all "golly gee whiz" silliness. It comes across as false, not informal and personal.Then, the plan or lack thereof. There are pages and pages of multi-paragraph descriptions of ingredients. I'm pretty sure by now I can identify okra, coconut, and gelatin, thanks. I skipped ahead to the suggested meal plans. Great! Except that almost every suggestion is a recipe found in the THM cookbook - which must be bought separately. So, even if I could take the sorority chatter, made it past all the filler, and was ready to jump into a new way of eating...too bad - go buy another book.Suggestion - don't advertise this as a complete plan when there isn't a single suggested day that doesn't require buying another book. It's greedy and misleading.I'd suggest the original (not meal delivery) South Beach Diet for a sustainable WOE without the corniness & weird, expensive, and unnecessary ingredients of THM. Oh, and that SBD has all the recipes you need.
